How Would Feng Shui complement Urban Planning

Ideally, if urban planning and land selection for urban building is left to Feng Shui specialists, we look for an organic blending of Feng Shui principles with functional convenience of urban life.

  • Mountains and rivers will be used to retain and store Qi generated from the core of Mother Earth.
  • There is usually little need to pull down a whole range of mountains to meet the growth of a city or town.
  • The main mountain ranges may be used to harness macro Qi by blending their entry into a growing cities and towns.
    • Some may argue this hinders the need to cater to growing populations in developing cities. This, we will counter by assuring that once the same FengShui principles are applied to the whole country, there is a place for everything: all industries - rural or urban based, and, all types of demographies. Suburbanisation will become a natural choice in hinterlands, where local economies will prosper from spill over of the main Qi from the cities. In Feng Shui, respecting laws of Nature only promotes quality of life.
  • A Feng Shui specialist would be able to work with hydraulic engineers on effective and sustainable Water networks. Meandering waterways with suitable flow regime, can be used to channel and direct macro Qi, while, preserving eco-systems and quality of water.
  • At times, in inner cities, we would use these macro landforms of mountains, roads and waterways to barricade Qi.
  • Allocation of focal areas of Qi is reserved for heads of public offices, and, the main commercial centres. Theses strategic placements will be well-guarded by Nature and / or man-made structures to serves these utmost important functions (and its population) for a long period of time.

Once, these core functions are located and aligned, the Qi of such cities and/ or townships will meander organically. Using principles of Landform Feng Shui, we will assess the quality of Soil, Water, &, placement of plots according to the city\'s natural Feng Shui formation. These will then determine suitable and sustainable locations for functions such as:

  • Residential estates
  • Schools
  • Administrative offices
  • Waste, drainage & sewage systems, and, landfills.
  • Water reservoirs
  • Traffic system
  • Ports and supporting infrastructures
  • Recreational centre
  • Nature reserves

People who have the fortune of living in such environment tend to be refined, ethical, purposeful, healthier, and, productive.

Time and again, a Feng Shui specialist understands that Qi quality harnessed organically from Mother Nature is the purest and longest lasting, and, thus the best.
At First Principles Inc., we provide following marco Feng Shui selection services for Urban planning:

  • carry out a thorough onsite analysis of the city / town, and, its surrounding hinterlands
  • select the best location/s for specific purposes and strategic functions for urban settings such as ports, public offices, and, main commercial centres
  • for undeveloped cities / towns, we will outline the type of demography of various estates, and, the timing which these estates will start to develop organically
  • outline the choices according to the types of outcomes and timing of these important events, be it good or bad, will occur

What is the relationship between Urban Planning & Feng Shui?

Without a master plan of how Qi regulation in a greater environment, urbanization tends to omit any reference to the dimensions of space and Qi, by treating all economic activity as if it took place at a single point.

The fact that population and economic activity are arranged in a spatial and functional order, and that Qi regulation determines the quality of the population -  is simply ignored.

Without such macro considerations, the emergence of Feng Shui as a tool in improving Human’s living conditions is lost.

Feng Shui is an environmental Chinese science.  It concentrates on the Qi relationships and processes that contribute to the important spatial characteristics of urban and regional economies, especially with relation to their size, population density, structure and land-use patterns.

It provides useful tools to investigate urban problems and find solutions for them. Unfortunately, most governments and local authorities have not taken advantage of the tools of regional and urban Feng Shui economics to study the problems of urban planning, infrastructure, finance, service delivery, poverty, slums, housing, land use, transportation, and environment.

When applied correctly, the fundamentals of Feng Shui aid the following:

Land Usage

For example, landmark architectures, and huge urban transportation terminals and channels such as airports, seaports, highways. These could be positive elements in ensuring good urban Feng Shui in many cities whilst maintaining their core functions to serve the populations.

These installations collect and regulate Qi in land use.  By using them correctly, the administration would be introducing strong non-convexity in consumers’ preferences and productivity.

Keeping the essence of Agglomeration in Urban Living

The natural progression of growing populations is high density, traffic congestion, pollution, over- exploitation of resources, and, environmental degradation.

A Feng Shui specialist is capable of working with Urban Planners to consider the spatial external economies of agglomeration.  By utilizing Feng Shui as a tool to forecast Qi coagulation (therefore population growth trend in select land), we will minimize congestion which will serve:

  • To improve private and social benefits
  • To control costs better; including those emanating from land use planning contain hidden sources of financing city development, such as transportation;

Space planning

  • Feng-Shui-designed cities may retain its fixities and amenities when such planning is done with a master plan for current and future purposes.
  • Feng Shui address non-convexities of population needs by locating infrastructures in Qi strategic locality

Respecting History

In most developed settlements, history and culture naturally exerts inertia in decision-making on location. Feng Shui can blend such inertia and the natural terrain with urban economic demands and functions, to improve the economy and harmonise the population.
